A rare invitation into Sámi reindeer calving season — quiet, respectful, and entirely on the reindeer’s terms.
Every spring, the reindeer return to the same mountain valleys to calve, as they have for generations. For a very limited period in May, a small number of guests are invited to join an active Sámi reindeer-herding family in this sensitive landscape.
Travel by snowmobile sled into the spring mountain landscape and spend the day quietly among the herd. Guests join not as spectators, but as quiet participants in the day. Learn how Sámi families protect the reindeer during calving season, help with simple daily tasks when appropriate, and experience life in the mountains as it unfolds naturally.
There are no performances, no guarantees, and no staging. If the timing and conditions are right, you may witness a newborn calf from a respectful distance. If not, you will still be present during one of the most important times in Sámi reindeer herding.
Around the fire, a traditional outdoor meal is prepared and shared. Stories — and sometimes joik — come naturally when the moment allows. This is slow Arctic life, based on trust, silence, and real Sámi knowledge passed down through generations.

Reindeer Island Hammerfest offers authentic Sámi experiences in the Arctic landscape of Finnmark, Northern Norway.
Guests can meet reindeer up close, learn about traditional reindeer herding, and experience Sámi culture through stories, joik, food and everyday life with a real reindeer-herding family.
We offer a range of small-group experiences throughout the year, including reindeer encounters, seasonal herding activities, slow-life cultural experiences, Arctic nature tours and Northern Lights excursions.
Our experiences focus on genuine encounters, respect for nature and culture, and giving visitors a deeper understanding of Sámi life in the Arctic.
